Serious verapamil poisoning: treatment with intravenous calcium gluconate.
نویسنده
چکیده
Verapamil is an antiarrhythmic and antianginal drug which selectively inhibits membrane transport and release of calcium from the endoplasmic reticulum, depressing the sinus node and atrioventricular conduction as well as producing a negative inotropic effect on the myocardium. Here I describe a patient who suffered the adverse haemodynamic and electrocardiographic effects consequent upon selfpoisoning with 3-2 g of verapamil and was successfully resuscitated by intravenous administration of calcium gluconate.

Hyperinsulinemic Euglycemia and Intravenous Lipid Emulsion Treatments for Calcium Channel Blocker and Beta Blocker Poisoning: A Report of Two Cases
Poisoning with calcium channel blockers and beta blockers are associated with high mortality and morbidity rates, especially in children. Treatment of poisoning with these drugs includes administration of atropine, glucagon, calcium and inotropic agents as clinically needed; and newer approaches like hyperinsulinemic euglycemia and intravenous lipid emulsion therapies. We herein present two ref...
متن کاملLevosimendan as Treatment Option in Severe Verapamil Intoxication: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Cardiovascular shock due to verapamil intoxication is often refractory to standard resuscitation methods. Recommended therapy includes prevention of further absorption of the drug, inotropic therapy, calcium gluconate, and hyperinsulinemia/euglycemia therapy. Often further measures are needed such as ventricular pacing or mechanical circulatory support. Still, mortality remains high. Levosimend...
متن کاملLipid Rescue Therapy and High-Dose insulin Euglycemic Therapy are Effective for Severe Refractory Calcium Channel Blocker Overdose: Case Report and Review of Literature
Background: High-Dose Insulin Euglycemic Therapy (HIET) and Lipid Rescue Therapy (LRT) are new alternative treatments for acute poisoning with calcium channel blockers. In this report a severely poisoned patient with verapamil and furosemide who was successfully treated with these two treatments is presented. Case report: A 27-year-old woman was brought to “Mother Theresa” Clinical Center in Sk...
متن کاملCalcium channel blockers, beta-blockers and digitalis poisoning: management in the emergency room.
Calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers intoxications account for up to 65% of deaths for cardiovascular drugs, causing severe clinical symptoms refractory to standard medications. The most serious poisonings are those resulting from verapamil and propanolol ingestion. Both support and antidotic therapy are necessary for these potentially unstable patients. Supportive measures and the use of...
